TOWNSHEND — The Windham Central Supervisory Union has announced that Rene Bernard recently was chosen and honored as an Outstanding Educator at the University of Vermont.
Every year, the College of Education and Social Services at UVM, along with the Vermont Agency of Education, the Vermont NEA, Vermont supervisory unions, and school districts gather to celebrate the accomplishments of Vermont's outstanding educators.
In a news release, the WCSU says it “has been fortunate to have Bernard onboard as its high school band director since the summer of 2016.”
The WCSU called Bernard “a consummate multi-tasker, directing the high school band as well as the pep and jazz bands while also teaching individual lessons and middle school instrumental music. In just a few years, Bernard has not only doubled the size of the band and brought back the marching band to WCSU, but he has also rebuilt the pep band.”
Bernard came to WCSU after more than 25 years teaching in Kansas and Iowa. He earned his bachelor's in music education from the University of North Texas and his master's in music education from the University of Missouri.
Leland & Gray principal Bob Thibault describes Bernard as a master teacher.
“He is adaptable, creative, and charismatic, and our students are lucky to learn from a man of such talent and skill,” Thibault said.
