The threat to American democracy is not from the outside

WARDSBORO — In response to the Viewpoint by the renowned professor of English and journalism, MacLean Gander, I ask, “Where's the breaking news?”

This boring and overstated attack on the elected president of our democracy is nothing more than the same talking points spewed every day by the obviously left-leaning “mainstream media” sources, such as The New York Times, Politico, The Washington Post, MSNBC, and others.

It's worth noting that it is not the job of the United States Congress to formulate and direct the diplomatic policies of the federal government. Diminishing viewership over the two-week span of the nationally televised (and partisan!) impeachment investigation by the Democrat-led House Committee on Intelligence and entrenched bureaucrats shows quite clearly that the American public is weary of the constant negative messaging that President Trump, as Gander attempts to argue, must be a spy or a lackey for the Russians.

I always proudly admit to being a lifelong Republican. In my opinion, the reactions to President Trump's actions as leader of the executive branch and commander-in-chief of the U.S. Armed Forces, has, without a doubt, pushed actors of the so-called “deep state” and non-elected government officials to expose themselves as the resistance against his administration for all Americans to witness.

As a parent of four children of college age, it deeply concerns me that college campuses across the nation may be being staffed by close-minded, opinion-writing professors who exemplify partisan political intolerance.

Not long ago, America prided itself as a country where conflicting ideas could be expressed openly in a public forum, and that we considered discussing our differences as being critical to a functioning democracy.

Instead, our younger generations are given leeway to shout down speakers on campus with opposing viewpoints. I don't believe that the threat to American democracy is from the outside, but rather from the moral decay on the inside.

Let's just listen to what everyone has to say.
