BMC’s popular ‘Singing Strong’ program resumes Feb. 25

BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Music Center's popular Singing Strong program resumes Feb. 25.

Sessions are scheduled for Tuesdays, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., through April 14 at the BMC Recital Hall, 72 Blanche Moyse Way, Brattleboro (across from Memorial Park). The cost is $85 for eight weeks; call the BMC at 802-257-4523 to sign up, or register at the first session.

No auditions or performances are required. Singing Strong is “for people who want to have fun and learn more about their voices along the way,” according to a news release.

Susan Dedell will lead a joyful hour of singing songs chosen from a variety of musical styles, including jazz standards, Broadway musicals, spirituals, folk songs, rounds, and more. Vocal exercises and tips will help participants keep and expand their range, enhance tone, and increase strength.

Participants will learn about the background of the songs, taken from a collection currently numbering almost 200 pieces of music selected by Dedell.

“We call it 'Singing Strong' because singing - especially in a group - boosts your immune system, improves heart health, improves circulation, and best of all, makes you happier. So come and raise your voice and join the fun,” Dedell says.

As pianist, choral director, and vocal repertoire coach, Dedell has worked with singers of all ages and levels of ability for over three decades. She directed the BMC Concert Choir for 29 years, was rehearsal assistant to Blanche Moyse, and is a long-time member of the BMC piano faculty.
