Respond to election fixing with a general strike

ATHENS — A general strike is the only appropriate response to any attempt by the Trump/Putin forces to fix the election or otherwise foment a coup.

Shut the country down.

This begins with the students, especially those attending colleges and high schools. (Can you imagine Brattleboro Union High School Principal Steve Perrin handing out detentions to patriots trying to save what's left of our democracy?)

As they are doing with the climate and Black Lives Matter crises, young people need to continue to assume their rightful leadership here, much as they did after Nixon's invasion of Cambodia in 1970, with a general student strike that helped end the war against the Vietnamese people.

And then the workers.

Early signs of this possibility have appeared with the news that the 100,000-member MLK Labor Council, an AFL-CIO regional body of labor groups representing more than 150 unions in the Seattle, Washington, area, has passed a resolution that calls for a general strike if Trump doesn't respect the outcome of the Nov. 3 election.

With students and workers in the lead, the rest of us will follow their righteous example and join them in stopping the Trump pretenders to the throne from seizing power.

All power to the people!
