Town deals with trash bag mix-up

BRATTLEBORO - The manufacturer of the town's pay-as-you-throw garbage bags recently sent local retailers purple bags intended for Portland, Maine. That has caused some understandable confusion for customers and for Triple-T, the town's solid-waste hauler.

According to Town Manager Peter Elwell, compounding this confusion is the fact that the Portland bags (30.6 gallons) are slightly smaller than the Brattleboro bags (33.5 gallons).

Customers who have ended up with Portland bags instead of Brattleboro bags can use the Portland bags, and Triple-T will pick them up as if they were Brattleboro bags.

Alternatively, customers can exchange unused Portland bags for the correct ones by arranging for an exchange at the town treasurer's office. Call 802-251-8153 or email [email protected] or [email protected] to make arrangements.

This food distribution takes place regularly on the fourth Thursday of every month. All are welcome.

Because of COVID-19, drive-up service and bags will be provided.

BAJC hosts virtual Purim celebration

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Area Jewish Community invites all to join a Zoom Into Purim Party on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m.

“Beat the winter blues and the COVID-19 doldrums with an evening of silliness and sharing,” the event organizers write in a news release, calling it a “joyful and fun-filled event.”

This Zoom-based celebration will feature Eugene Uman, director of the Vermont Jazz Center, and it will include other musical performances, a costume contest with virtual awards (all are invited to dress up), storytelling, poetry, singing, some jokes, virtual dancing, “and other wacky stuff.”

The event will also feature a comic satirical retelling of the story of Queen Esther and her triumph. Rabbi Ahuvah (Amy) Loewenthal will be master of ceremonies.

To register (required for connection information to be sent to you), email [email protected] or call 802-257-1959.

Donations by check are appreciated and can be sent to BAJC, P.O. Box 2353, Brattleboro, VT 05303.
