Dummerston Historical Society will share art of dry stone walling

DUMMERSTON - President Jared Flynn will share the art form of dry stone walling, in which structures are built solely using stone, at the Dummerston Historical Society's quarterly meeting and program via Zoom on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.

In 2010, Flynn was one of the three founders, with Zon Eastes and Dan Snow, of The Stone Trust, a nonprofit based at the Scott Farm at 707 Kipling Rd., offering dry stone walling educational opportunities for all levels of interest.

Flynn, a certified instructor, offers professional development and serves as the organization's test site coordinator.

Vernon Free Library seeks new trustee

VERNON - Vernon Free Library is recruiting candidates for one open seat on the board of trustees for a three-year unexpired term.

If you have a passion for the library and would like to give some of your time each month to make the library a better place, send an email or letter of interest (Trustee Position, Board of Trustees, Vernon Free Library, 567 Governor Hunt Rd., Vernon, VT 05354).

Deadline for submission is Sunday, Oct. 31.

Applicants will be interviewed by the board, and the successful candidate's name will be submitted to the Selectboard for appointment.

Manitou hosts final healing walk of season

WILLIAMSVILLE - The Manitou Project, at 300 Sunset Lake Rd., will hold its final healing walk of the season on Friday, Oct. 22, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

“As the final one of the season, this walk will be a celebration of our connection to the land,” organizers write in a news release.

The walk will be hosted by both Mike Mayer and Fred Taylor, who will share poems and other readings celebrating connections with the Earth and this season, along with a special song.

Participants will also have the chance to share reflections on the experience.

Windham-4 reps to hold online meeting Oct. 23

PUTNEY - State Reps. Michelle Bos-Lun and Mike Mrowicki will host another of their online community conversations for constituents of the Windham-4 district of Westminster, Putney, and Dummerston on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 10 a.m.

A variety of issues, including COVID-19, the climate crisis, racial justice, women's reproductive freedom - will be addressed in bills to be voted upon in the coming legislative session. Bos-Lun and Mrowicki will update constituents and answer questions about goals, challenges, and proposed legislation.

The Vermont Legislature will begin the second year of the 2021-23 biennium in January. Bills that didn't pass last year can still be worked on before the scheduled adjournment in May 2022.

“Bring questions, suggestions, comments, or concerns about issues important to you and the state,” the lawmakers urge.

VTC announces auditions for 'The Winter's Tale'

BRATTLEBORO - Auditions for an upcoming production of The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare will take place at the Hooker-Dunham Theater and Gallery, 139 Main St., on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 10 a.m.

Performances will run from Feb. 11 to 13 and 18 to 20, 2022.

When the paranoid King Leontes locks up his wife and exiles his infant daughter, the ramifications of his monstrous acts are felt across years and kingdoms. The Winter's Tale combines elements of tragedy, comedy, realism, and fantasy to create a story that still resonates with audiences today.

For the audition, actors must prepare a Shakespeare monologue of their choice, about 1 to 2 minutes in length.

All actors must bring proof of vaccination and a mask.

'Bike to the Box' for National Take Back Day

BELLOWS FALLS - To mark the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, Saturday Oct. 23, Greater Falls Connections (GFC) will host Bike to the Box.

This event, which runs from noon to 2 p.m., at the Bellows Falls Police Department, provides an opportunity for all community members to dispose of their unwanted or unused prescriptions at BFPD's prescription drug drop box.

Bike to the Box will include games, music, and the opportunity to receive a free prescription drug lock box.

GFC will have resources and information about avoiding prescription drug misuse and abuse.

New Yorker magazine discussion group forms at Brooks Library

BRATTLEBORO - Do you read The New Yorker magazine regularly? Would you like to discuss recent articles with fellow readers? Brooks Memorial Library, 224 Main St., will host an exploratory meeting, seeking input from prospective members about forming a New Yorker magazine discussion group on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m.

Similar to a book group, participants would bring their favorite articles in the magazine every month for comments and discussion.

All attendees of the free and accessible meeting must wear masks by order of the town.

Putney monthly free produce available Oct. 28

PUTNEY - The Vermont Foodbank and the Putney Foodshelf will co-sponsor the next monthly drop of free produce and some nonperishables on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at Putney Meadows, 17 Carol Brown Way (the white building across from the Putney Food Co-op and the fire station).

This food distribution takes place on the fourth Thursday of every month. All are welcome.

Because of COVID-19, those who need food will receive bags of food from volunteers after driving up.

Hospice offers advance care planning workshop

BRATTLEBORO - On Thursday, Oct. 28, from 10 to 11 a.m., Brattleboro Area Hospice's Taking Steps Brattleboro (TSB) program will host an online advance care planning/advance directive question-and-answer information session.

Advance care planning is a process of creating a written health care plan that tells others what you will want if you can't tell them yourself.

It includes discussing choices about end-of-life care with your medical provider, family, and others.

Advance care planning also includes choosing and educating your health care agent and making informed decisions to complete an advance directive. Participants can learn if adding a COVID-19 or dementia provision would be beneficial to include or add to a previously completed advance directive.

Williamsville goes to the dogs on Oct. 30

WILLIAMSVILLE - The 2021 Williamsville International Dog Show is set for Saturday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 5 p.m., at Williamsville Hall, 35 Dover Rd.

There is a $10 entry fee (for dog and handler) and $5 for general admission. Dogs will strut their stuff in front of a panel of judges. There will be prizes for Best in Show, Best in Purebred, Best in Mix, Best in Tricks, and Best in Tail.

Drive/walk-thru Halloween event planned in Brattleboro

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department, in collaboration with Brooks Memorial Library, will host drive-thru/walk-thru trick-or-treating at the Municipal Center parking lot on Sunday, Oct. 31 between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.

Event organizers ask that all ghouls and goblins enter the Municipal Center parking lot from the Grove Street entrance and follow designated walking lanes and driving lanes.

Vehicle trunks will be decorated, and volunteers and staff will hand out goodies while supplies last.

Staff from the police and fire departments will also be helping with the event.

Fall woodworking classes offered at HatchSpace

BRATTLEBORO - Classes for beginners and experienced woodworkers are coming up at HatchSpace, a nonprofit, community-supported woodworking space at 22 High St.

Upcoming classes include:

• Refresher for Woodworkers (Thursdays, 1 to 4 p.m., Oct. 28 through Nov 11; $205; some woodworking experience recommended)

• Beginning Lathe Techniques (Saturday, Oct. 30, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; $80; tools and materials provided; no previous lathe experience required)

• Make a Shaker Bench (Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nov. 6 and 7, 13 and 14; $250; no woodworking experience required)
