In 1960, my mother thought she had been blessed with an exceptionally content baby. I was barely out of the womb when she discovered that I had been stricken by polio.

I was immobilized by paralysis, even stripped of my ability to cry. I certainly couldn't twist about and flail the way most newborns do.
