Imagine a high school team created, funded and coached by the players themselves.
Then imagine that same do-it-yourself team winning a state championship in its first year of existence.
It sounds improbable, but a group of Brattleboro Union High School Ultimate Frisbee players did exactly that as they recently captured a championship in a statewide tournament in St. Johnsbury. Brattleboro Ultimate went a perfect 5-0 on championship day to bring home the title.
The 15-player Brattleboro Ultimate team was launched by BUHS students Harrison Chase and Jeff Hetzel.
Well, folks, state tournament action got under way last week with several of our local high school teams in action. So let's get to it! In Brattleboro on June 1, the No. 4 Colonels hosted No. 13 Burlington in the opening round of the Division I baseball tournament on...
All businesses face challenges during an economic downturn, but both the local and national arts scenes have been particularly affected. Perhaps that's because many who would otherwise patronize the cultural activities in a better economy consider such expenses a luxury and not of significant importance, therefore considering activities such...
Windham Art Gallery (WAG) recently completed a lengthy project in which selected artist members of the gallery painted and will now permanently install some 25 door panels at the Vermont Veteran's Home in Bennington. The permanent installation process follows a month-long exhibit of the panels at the gallery in February. "The original plan was to install the panels in March and after the WAG exhibition, because it just seemed the sooner-the-better," said gallery artist member Leonard Ragouzeos, head of the...
In any business, hard work and integrity builds a strong foundation. Such is the case for the band Stonewall and the business of playing their fiery brand of heavy, original grunge-style rock music. Hailing from Claremont, N.H., Stonewall has steadily built a following throughout Southern Vermont and into the Connecticut River Valley. The band has booked upcoming shows throughout southern Vermont and New Hampshire, as well as Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York. The band has reached another milestone with the...
Some two years ago, Lyman Orton was in the process of organizing an exhibit from his private collection, "Lost Vermont Images," when he was inspired - inspired with the idea of turning the tables on his concept by looking through art to the future instead of the past. Orton, an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and lifelong Vermonter whose family created the Vermont Country Stores in Weston and Rockingham, began thinking about the possibilities of how art could express ideas that affect the...
For more than three decades, stained-glass artist Rick Neumann has been refining his craft - the ancient art of delicate stained glass creations - through the design, application, and restoration of glass artworks with business and life partner Liza King. Neumann honed his craft as a Windham College student and went on to study at the well-respected Condon Studios in Connick, Greenland. He has worked exclusively with stained glass since 1972. Their studio on Strand Avenue, small by design, offers...
From the first glance of his soon-to-be gallery and studio, Barre Pinske is not what you would call your prototypical artist. What started out over 20 years ago as a modest chainsaw carving hobby has blossomed into a well-rounded career for the professional artist and gallery owner. Pinske recently bought a commercial property near the Chester Depot and is converting the new space into The Illana Joffrey Fine Arts & High Craft gallery. “I just really like the sound of...
