A day of Medieval upheaval

Annual Medieval Faire is Oct. 15

PUTNEY — Every October, the children of Windham County get to see their parents, teachers, tutors, and friends transform into knights, knaves, jesters, queens, and kings. Costume shops are emptied and sewing machines are unearthed.

But it isn't even Halloween yet.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, The Grammar School (TGS) campus on 69 Hickory Ridge Rd. will transform into a medieval village as it hosts its 24th annual Medieval Faire.

King Arthur and his court have been gracing TGS with their presence for 24 years. The Medieval Faire assembles parents, teachers, children, and community members for a day of fun.

It is a free event, although tickets are needed for rides. Either individual or day-long passes will available from a central ticket booth.

Most Faire attendees choose to don capes, crowns, tunics, and armor, but dressing the part is not mandatory.

Medieval History has been taught at TGS since the school's founding and is still an important part of the curriculum. What originally began as a medieval-themed meal followed by a concert intended to celebrate the winter holiday, has evolved into today's Medieval Faire.

As usual, this year's Faire includes child-friendly activities and games such as a climbing wall, a haunted dungeon, a dunking booth, and a labyrinth course.

Children can seize the spirit of the day with medieval-themed pastimes like archery, crossbow paintball, and a pillow joust.

When asked what has typically been most popular with children at the Faire in past years, TGS Development Director Pauline O'Brien answered, “Being knighted by Sir Lancelot, swan and dragon rides, and the piñata.”

No Medieval Faire would be complete without a feast. The “Tavern” features assorted food and non-alcoholic beverages, with everything from chili, lasagna, macaroni and cheese, to hot dogs and baked potatoes, to chicken/turkey drumsticks, corn bread, and quiche.

Seasonal treats will range from doughnuts and cider to caramel apples, pies, and cookies.

Besides the Tavern, what is most popular with adults? O'Brien answered, “Watching children enjoy the day.”

And if you're lucky, maybe you'll be knighted.
