Workshop seeks to help artists with publicity, promotion of their work

PUTNEY — The Arts Council of Windham County, in partnership with The Commons and Next Stage Arts Project, presents “The Art of the Press Release,” a free workshop that will be held on Wednesday, May 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Next Stage on Kimball Hill.

Joyce Marcel of The Commons, Lynn Barrett of the quarterly magazine Southern Vermont Arts and Living, and WTSA-FM News Director Tim Johnson will share their perspectives in this free artists' forum. They will offer tips to help artists and arts organizations use local media outlets effectively to promote their work.

Panelists will answer the following questions:

• What in an artist's life and business is newsworthy?

• Whom are we trying to reach?

• What is the message, both intellectual and emotional?

• How does one get the feel of one's art into a press release?

• How can photos make a pitch more effective?

• What does it take to build, maintain, and use a press list?

• How much is too much?

• Has social media changed the press release?

The forum will begin with a potluck dessert and tours of Next Stage. The forum is appropriate for all artists, craftspeople, and anyone else involved in producing press releases.
