Winter group exhibit opens at Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts

BRATTLEBORO — For the months of December and January, Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts presents Winter Group, a group exhibit featuring work by gallery owners Petria Mitchell and Jim Giddings, new work from their gallery artists, and introducing Eric Boyer, Anne Johnstone, Gene Parulis, and Torin Porter.

The exhibit opens Thursday, Dec. 1, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. An artist forum with the exhibitors is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 7, at 5 p.m., according to a news release.

Boyer is an Oregon sculptor formerly from Brattleboro, who manipulates wire mesh to create exquisite human and abstract forms.

Johnstone, from Somerville, Massachusetts, works in collage, oil, and wax to create dramatic and intense pieces that use distortion and exaggeration to both convey and bring forth heightened emotional response.

Parulis has been photographing around the world for more than 50 years, exploring themes of nature, spirituality, travel, and architecture.

Porter is a sculptor from Glover, Vermont, working primarily with steel and engaging imaginations with his playful, stylized figures.

Working artists themselves, gallery owners Petria Mitchell and Jim Giddings have been running Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts since September, 2014. The gallery represents more than 30 artists and is sought and valued by prominent and emerging artists.

Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts also is the host for the Vermont Insight Meditation Center's silent auction, which offers a variety of high-quality items for bid including paintings, photographs, prints, books, ceramics, a handmade ukulele, and a getaway/retreat in Putney. The auction will open during Gallery Walk on Dec. 2 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and will culminate on Dec. 10 with a closing bid party from 5 to 7 p.m., with final bidding at 6 p.m.
