Get the ‘smartest card' at Brooks Memorial Library

BRATTLEBORO — September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Brooks Memorial Library wants to make sure that families in Brattleboro and surrounding communities have the smartest card of all - a library card.

Your library card provides access to a wealth of free resources and activities. Besides the ability to checkout resources from the largest public library in Southern Vermont with 75,000 volumes, you get Internet access with 15 computer stations; DVDs; eAudio; more than 25 databases accessible from your home computer;  CD audio books; in-house portable DVD player; mp3 players.

Books and other resources for children make a difference in the lives of students. By providing school-age children with engaging programs and amazing collections, students from all backgrounds become excited and enthusiastic readers.

Activities and special discounts are available at the Brooks Memorial Library and local bookstores during Library Card Sign-up Month:

For all new nonresident borrowers during the month you will be entitled to a full year membership for the cost of a six month card, or $25 instead of the $48 one year fee. All new members, which include Brattleboro residents, will become an automatic member of Friends of Brooks Memorial Library, a $15 value.

In addition, for any library member with “the smartest card,” show your BML card at any Brattleboro bookstore and receive a 15 percent discount on the purchase of books during the month. Some restrictions do apply, check with the bookstore: The Book Cellar, 120 Main St.; Baskets Paperback Palace, 22 High St.; Brattleboro Books, 34 Eliot St.; Everyone's Books, 25 Eliot St.; and Mystery on Main, 119 Main St.

Getting a library card is easy. Just bring in one form of identification with your mailing address (not a post office box). Your choice of a borrower's card (key tag or traditional)  will be issued to you on the spot.

Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.
