Cub Scouts help clean up Saxtons River Rec Area

SAXTONS RIVER — Two young Webelos Scouts were among those who turned out recently to help prepare the 15-acre Saxtons River Recreation Area for the summer season.

Liam Mallan and Mason Walker of Pack 401 combined doing a good turn with working toward their handyman activity badge by helping repair picnic tables, rake leaves, and clean out the Rec Area's storage shed.

Webelos is an acronym meaning “We'll be loyal scouts.”

“We like to help the community,” said 10-year-old Liam. “In Cub Scouts, we learn to build stuff,” he added, citing the Scouts' recent projects creating straw bridges, making cars for the pinewood derby and putting together a puppet show.

The Scouts have also held a food drive for Our Place Drop In Center, collected money for The Animal Rescue and Protection Society, and delivered Christmas dinners, according to leader Amanda Desmarais.

The handyman badge requires the Scouts to identify different tools and how to use them, organize and create a storage area for tools, and learn basic repairs.

“I helped my grandpa with plumbing in the shower and building a room,” beamed Mason.

Both boys were working with supervision from Tim Morton as they fastened together repairs to the picnic tables at the Rec Area. Liam said they will return come summer for some of his favorite activities: swimming, playing Frisbee, soccer, and everything that comes with the Fourth of July.
