BRATTLEBORO-Green Writers Press and ByWay Books & More will launch In the Hushed Thunder by the late Ken Hebson of Guilford and Brattleboro, with a special reading by Hebson's editor, Michael Fleming.
The celebration of Hebson's book will take place on Tuesday, April 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. at ByWay Books & More, 399 Canal St.
"The event will be an intimate gathering to listen to selected poems by Ken, who was so happy to know his book was coming out," organizers wrote in a news release.
In this collection of poems, published posthumously, Hebson explores the Buddhist teaching that "a move in space would not/affect at all who we are."
Hebson takes readers along on his travels from Barcelona to Cairo to Kabul, capturing a vivid sense of place through his close attention to detail and an eye for the unexpected. But Hebson's poems are much more than a simple travelogue. "Wherever he finds himself," wrote organizers, "his lifelong subject is the universal quest to understand the human condition."
Hebson (1940–2022) graduated from the University of Michigan in 1966 before setting out on travels all over the world. Spain was the country that captured his heart and remained his passion throughout his life, say organizers. There he and his wife Susan bought a farm and managed to eke out their subsistence for several years before returning to the United States and a job with the Ford Motor Company that took them to Venezuela and Japan.
Settling in Brattleboro, Vermont, in 1991, he lived out the rest of his life writing poetry and working on his memoir. "A caring husband and father, Hebson was a published poet, an engaging storyteller, and a lifelong Buddhist."
