PUTNEY-Next Stage Arts presents a double bill with Armo and JMMR (Jordan McLean's Musical Resistance) as part of the Bandwagon Summer Series on Saturday, July 19, at 6 p.m. at Putney Inn Field, 57 Putney Landing Rd.
Armo is led by longtime collaborators from the Brooklyn-based Afrobeat band Antibalas. The ensemble includes a lineup of Jordan McLean (trumpet/percussion), Marcus Farrar (vocals/percussion), Nikhil P. Yerawadekar (guitar/keys), Kevin Raczka (drums), Justin Kimmel (bass), and Dave "Smoota" Smith (trombone/keys).
Their performances "celebrate and reinvent" the music of Afrobeat legends like Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, and Ebo Taylor, "alongside their rhythm-driven originals," organizers said in a news release. Members of Armo have played with iconic artists and groups such as David Byrne, Angelique Kidjo, Public Enemy, and in the Tony Award-winning musical FELA!
Sharing the bill is JMMR, a cutting-edge project also spearheaded by McLean. Known for their blending of alternative jazz and electronic textures, JMMR features Smith on trombone and synths, along with Tony Jarvis (bass clarinet/synths), and John Walter Bollinger (drums/cymbals).
Their upcoming debut album Resistance is Fertile, out this July on Nublu Records, fuses synthetic and organic sound.
Tickets are $22 in advance, $25 at the gate. Admission is free for kids under 12. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. Tickets and information at nextstagearts.org.
