PUTNEY-The penultimate week of Yellow Barn's 56th Summer Music Festival kicks off 10 days of nightly events, starting with a triple header this Thursday through Saturday.
The final run begins on Thursday, July 31, with works by Robert Schumann (including the Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 47); Gunther Schuller's "Phantasmata" for violin and marimba, featuring Curtis Macomber on violin; and Mexican composer Hilda Paredes's "El Prestidigitador" ("The Conjurer") for winds and percussion.
Friday, Aug. 1, brings the Shostakovich Violin Sonata performed by Anthony Marwood, Brahms's Clarinet Quintet in B minor; and Miriam Gideon's "Sonnets From Shakespeare" for voice, French horn, and string quartet with baritone William Sharp.
On Saturday, Aug. 2, Yellow Barn offers the first of two performances with young guest performers: Two 15-year-old violinists will join Yellow Barn musicians for a weeklong exploration and performance of Luciano Berio's duetti por due violini.
As with György Kurtág's Játékok (Games), which is being performed on Saturday, August 9th, "this project is dedicated to the concept of the Beginner's Mind, the openness of exploring rather than the narrowness of knowing," organizers wrote in a news release. Saturday's program also includes Benjamin Britten's Songs and Proverbs of William Blake and Béla Bartók's String Quartet No. 2 in A minor.
Yellow Barn values all audience members and will make efforts to accommodate all circumstances. Its "Pay What You Can" program makes a certain number of reduced-priced tickets available for each concert. Full program details are available online at yellowbarn.org. Tickets can be purchased or reserved online or by calling 802-387-6637. Festival Concerts are generally 2 to 2.5 hours in length, including an intermission with ice cream and blueberries.
