Overwhelmed with politics? Simple ways to make a difference.

WESTMINSTER WEST-The United States is in a different place from where it was seven months ago. We have a president who is ignoring the courts and the Constitution, and we have a Congress who is turning a blind eye.

Below are a few suggestions from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) on how you can help:

• Stay strong and protest - peacefully! Violence is not the answer.

• Look at your phone contacts and ask friends who have Republican senators to reach out to their representatives and ask them to rein President Trump in. (Look at 5calls.org for suggested phone scripts.)

• Join organizations that have similar goals. Get your voice amplified.

• Tell personal stories to your Democratic representatives, to readers on social media, and to your friends. One single individual's image or story can have a massive effect. There are personal stories that will make a difference to the people who hear them.

In addition:

• Find a topic that you are enthusiastic about and become an expert. By focusing on one topic, we can be more effective. Start at the state and local level. There is so much happening it can be overwhelming. By focusing our energies we can make a difference.
