Local athletes earn SVL honors

-The Southern Vermont League (SVL) released their all-league selections for baseball, lacrosse, softball, tennis, track and field, and Ultimate disc last week, with plenty of representation from our local schools.

• In baseball, Brattleboro’s Sean Cozza, Kmar Hall, and Cooper LaFlam received honorable mention in the A Division.

In the B Division, Division III runner-up Bellows Falls had Jaden Bazin, Jake Tostrup, and Steven Joslyn named to the first team, with Jacob Kissell, Jackson Fletcher, and Tim Fletcher receiving honorable mention. Bob Lockerby received Coach of the Year honors.

Leland & Gray’s Spencer Claussen and Ryder Butynski were first-team selections in the C Division, with Frank Flood and Connor Richardson receiving honorable mention.

Twin Valley’s Colton Corey and Max Nido were first-team selections in the D Division, with Colton Cunningham and Halen Ranslow receiving honorable mention.

• In softball, Brattleboro’s Alyssa Jones and Hannah Squires were first-team selections in the A Division, with Jasmine Thibault and Ericka Fletcher receiving honorable mention.

Grace Hayes, Jaelyn Fletcher and Brielle Mulverhill of Bellows Falls were first-team selections in the B Division, with Brook Parker receiving honorable mention.

Leland & Gray’s McKinley Bertram and Addison Eldridge were first-team selections in the C Division, with Sophia Hallock, Molly Bingham, and Annabelle Brookes receiving honorable mention.

• In boys’ lacrosse, Brattleboro’s Gabe Alexander, Griffin Packard, Carter Mialkowski, Max Madow, and Jackson Patno were named to the A Division second team, while Colby Robinson, JT Easton, Lucas Speno, and Luke DiZoglio received honorable mention. Brattleboro’s Romello Lindsey was named Coach of the Year.

Four Brattleboro girls’ lacrosse players earned SVL and All-State team honors. Emerson Frehsee and Parker Thibault were both named to the A Division first team and the All-State first team, while Juliette Pals and Natalie Knutson were named to the A Division second team. Pals was named to the All-State second team, while Knutson receieved honorable mention.

• In track and field, Brattleboro’s Hailey Richards was a Division I girls’ first team honoree, while Veronica Moore was named to the Division III girls’ first-team, and teammate Gracie Patterson received honorable mention.

Brattleboro’s Stockton Woodruff and Nico Conathan-Leach were boys’ first team honorees in Division I, while Morgan Haskell and Brockton Lovell of Bellows Falls received honorable mention in Division III.

• In tennis, Bellows Falls’ Myleigh Illingsworth and Anny King, and Brattleboro’s Vivian Elliot were girls’ first-team selections, with BF girls’ coach David Chesley named Coach of the Year. BF’s Avery Dole received honorable mention.

Brattleboro’s Seamus Bald and Mark Richards were boys’ first-team selections, with Dashiell Moyse and Felix Hulme receiving honorable mention.

• Brattleboro’s Levi Green and Christopher Tustin were first-team selections in Ultimate, with Leland & Gray’s Joe Towle named Coach of the Year.

Legion baseball season begins

• The 2026 American Legion Baseball season began in Vermont last week as Bellows Falls Post 37 defeated Bennington Post 13, 14-5, on June 16. A scheduled league game on June 18 at Hadley Field between Post 37 and White River Junction Post 84 got rained out.

Brattleboro Post 5 started its season June 19 at Rutland Post 31, and came away with a dramatic 3-2 win in eight innings at St. Peter’s Field. Jackson Dermatis got the game-winning RBI for Post 5 when he a hit a fly ball to shallow center field that was just deep enough to score the tagging Ryan Peloso from third base.

Dermatis, who played high school ball in Keene, New Hampshire, this season, also started the game on the mound for Brattleboro. He went four innings and struck out five, allowing four hits and two runs. Sean Cozza, the top pitcher on the BUHS staff this season, threw the final four innings, allowing three hits with three strikeouts to earn the win.

Little League playoff rosters set

• Brattleboro Little League recently announced the rosters for the three teams that it will send to the upcoming district tournaments. Players, coaches, umpires, and board members all voted in the Tournament Team selection process at the conclusion of the regular season.

Three tournament teams (ages 9–10, 10–11, and 11–12) were selected. Here are the rosters for Brattleboro’s teams:

• 12U: Drew Alexander, Grayson Boudreau, Patrick Carroll, Jacob Gallagher, Bryson Letourneau, Teddy McKay, Simon Potter, Mason Rea, Majer Rodriguez, Hayden Scott, Jordan Torres, Benson Urban. Coaches: Chad Gundry, manager; Brian Potter, assistant coach; Rob Rea, assistant coach.

• 11U: Damien Atherton, Alexander Brown, Emerson Deyo, Brayden Earp, Jimmy Martin, Jasper Miller, Jordan Petlock, Justin Rivera, Griffen Salway, Ben Steves, Jaxyn Vargas, Bradley Zolnoski. Coaches: Dave Zolnoski, manager; Jon Earp, assistant coach; Lance Cutler, assistant coach.

• 10U: Ryan Alexander, Jackson Corby, Cameron Frechette, Shane Gallagher, Brayden Gouger, Lewis Hatch, Nick Libardoni, Griffen Rich, Mason Rosa, Lincoln Sanchez, Jace Snow, Adam Willson. Coaches: Eric Gallagher, manager; Eric Libardoni, assistant coach; Lew Hatch, assistant coach.

The District 2 tournaments will begin on Monday, July 6, for the 10U and 12U teams. The Brattleboro 10U team hosts Rutland at 6 p.m. at South Main Street Field. Brattleboro will then play at Bennington on Wednesday, July 8, will host Bennington on Saturday, July 11, at 1 p.m., and complete the opening round at Rutland on Sunday, July 12, at 1 p.m.

Brattleboro’s 12U team plays its first district game July 7 at 6 p.m. when they host Rutland. They then travel to Bennington on July 8 at 6 p.m., host Bennington on July 11, at 4 p.m., and finish the opening round July 12, at 4 p.m. at Rutland.

The two teams with the best records in their respective age groups after the opening round will then play a best-of-three game series for the District 2 championships beginning July 15. The District 2 champ will advance to the state championship tournament that begins July 23.

The Brattleboro 11U team will host the state championship tournament, and gets the automatic District 2 berth for the tournament, which begins at South Main Street field on July 18. The winner will represent Vermont in a regional invitational tournament held in Beverly, Massachusetts, in early August.

BOC hosts summer paddle, potluck breakfast

• The Brattleboro Outing Club (BOC) will host its annual Welcome Summer, Sunrise Paddle & Potluck Breakfast Saturday, June 27. This event is free and open to the public; just show up with a non-motorized boat, all the safety gear required, and food.

Paddlers meet at 5:30 a.m. at the Royal Diner on Route 9 in West Brattleboro; or at 6 a.m. at the Coffee House at the junction of Route 9 West and Route 100 South in Wilmington. From there, participants will head to Lake Whitingtham (Harrington Reservoir) to paddle out to an island for a potluck breakfast and to enjoy the lake, before it gets too bumpy and windy. Paddlers can stay out as long, or little as they wish.

Firecracker 4-Miler on July 4

• The Red Clover Rovers running club presents the annual Bill Powers Memorial Firecracker 4-Miler on Saturday, July 4, in Brattleboro.

This is a 4-mile point-to-point race that begins at Living Memorial Park, travels through downtown Brattleboro and ends at the town common. Each mile is marked, with a water station at Mile 2. There are prizes for the male and female overall winners, and the winner of each age group (1–12, 13–19, 20–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, and 60+).

Water and light refreshments will be provided at the finish. In order to minimize impact on the environment, the race features local or organically produced food, and compostable cups at the water stop and at the finish.

The cost is $15 for online pre-registration at runsignup.com/Race/VT/Brattleboro/BillPowersMemorialFirecracker4Miler, or $25 on race day at Living Memorial Park starting at 8 a.m. and closing at 9 a.m.

Twin Valley to create athletics hall of fame

• Twin Valley Middle High School in Whitingham is planning to establish an athletics hall of fame and seeks community members to participate on a selection committee.

According to a news release, the proposed hall of fame “will celebrate not just Twin Valley athletic accomplishments, but also the rich tradition of Whitingham and Wilmington high school athletics. Those two schools came together in 2004 to create Twin Valley High School. The hall of fame will span all eras of athletics at the three schools.”

Organizers are looking for representation from Wilmington, Whitingham, and the surrounding communities in honoring former athletes, teams, coaches, and contributors. Anyone interested in participating or contributing materials should contact Twin Valley coach Chris Brown at [email protected].

Senior bowling roundup

• Week 6 of the spring/summer season of the Brattleboro Senior Bowling League at Brattleboro Bowl on June 1 saw Queen ‘n’ Jokers (22-8) have a 5-0 week to take over first place. Skippers (20-10) moved into second place, followed by Slo Movers (19-11), Number 1, Pin Heads, and Strike Force (all 17-13), The House (15-15), Near Miss (14-16), Ducks (8-22), and Team Two (1-29).

Mary Piluski had the women’s high handicap game (244), while Nancy Dalzell had the high handicap series (451). Skip Shine had the men’s high handicap game (249) and series (675). Near Miss had the high team handicap game (865) and Pin Heads had the high handicap series (2,495).

Kevin Napaver had the men’s high scratch series (628) with games of 218, 217, and 193, while Robert Rigby had a 600 series with games of 235 and 194. Rich Pietro had a 559 series with a 210 game, John Walker had a 539 series with a 202 game, and Warren Corriveau Sr. had a 521 series with a 208 game. Stan Kolpa had a 514 series with a 205 game, Rick Westcott had a 505 series, Gary Montgomery had a 501 series with a 202 game, and Shine rolled a 205.

Dalzell had the women’s high scratch series (451) and game (166). Carol Gloski had a 156 game, Darlene Ladabouche had a 152 game, and Debbie Kolpa rolled a 150.
