Grant proposal writing workshop at Brooks Library
BRATTLEBORO - The Brooks Memorial Library will host a free public workshop for grant seekers on Friday, Aug. 11, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room.
Cynthia Nuara, Funding Information Network Specialist at The Foundation Center, will present “Intro to Proposal Writing,” a class designed for newcomers to the grant proposal process and experienced grant writers who want a quick refresher. She will provide an overview of how to write a standard project proposal to a foundation as well as explain the basics of finding and applying for government funding.

Healing walk at Manitou
WILLIAMSVILLE - The Manitou Project will hold a healing walk on Friday, Aug. 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. This meditative walk on Manitou's Sanctuary Trail will be led by Mike Mayer, and will include poems or other readings, and chances to share about the experience.
Healing walks will be held, rain or shine, every second and fourth Friday of each month until October.
The Manitou Project seeks to foster community with nature on its 235-acre land preserve in Williamsville, located at 300 Sunset Lake Rd. Documentary screening benefits Carry Me Home
BRATTLEBORO - On Friday, Aug. 11, at 6 p.m., at the Hooker-Dunham Theater, 139 Main St., the award winning documentary film, Sauti (Voice) will be screened. The film follows the story of five young women living in the Kiyangwali refugee settlement in Uganda and highlights the struggles that face women refugees in particular.
Carry me Home is organizing this event as a benefit for COBURWAS International Youth Organization to Transform Africa. The group was founded over 10 years ago by displaced youth living within the Kiyangwali settlement, and their mission has been to provide opportunities for youth to pursue education and leadership training.
Following the screening there will be a discussion led by one of the women from the film, and Youth Organization member Favourite Regina, who will be visiting from Uganda, as well as Brattleboro community member and the organization's co-founder, Bahati Kanyamanza.
This promises to be a unique opportunity to hear from two remarkable individuals who have experienced the struggles of refugee life and are working on the ground to make a change. Conservation Commission sponsors nature hike
DUMMERSTON - Join arborist Jonathan Royce on this short hike of moderate difficulty to Dummerston's Town Forest on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m.
Prospect Hill, also known as Blueberry Hill, has magnificent views to the east, south, and west. Hikers may learn about local nature using the new Prospect Hill Trail guide, available at the start of the trail. This new guide was developed by the Dummerston School fifth-graders.

Green Mountain Camp for Girls celebrates 100 years on Aug. 12
WEST DUMMERSTON - Green Mountain Camp for Girls is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, and the camp is throwing a party on Aug. 12 to celebrate alumni, current campers, volunteers, staff, donors, community members, and everyone who helps make the camp such a magical place.
They invite everyone to join for fun, food, music, and memories, rain or shine, at the camp on 565 Green Mountain Camp Rd. Attendees may come for a single event or stay for the whole day. Edible Brattleboro launches Share the Harvest program
BRATTLEBORO - Edible Brattleboro is launching its weekly “Share the Harvest” stand on Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Elliott Street Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In addition to produce from their gardens, Edible Brattleboro is also accepting donations of fresh produce from local gardeners and farmers. The stand will be set up at the Elliott Street Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Everything is available to the community at no cost. Please drop off your surplus to the stand as close to 11 a.m. as possible.
They also need volunteers to keep the stand going through the season, as well as to help out with gleaning from the Farmers' Market on Saturdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Visit signup.com/go/GmYCbae to sign up. Brattleboro Time Traders can earn hours for volunteering.
Blood drive at NewBrook firehouse
NEWFANE - The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at the NewBrook Fire Department on Route 30 on Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 1 to 6 p.m.
The American Red Cross urges blood donors to give in the final weeks of summer to help overcome a chronic summer blood shortage.
In August, regular donors may delay giving as final summer vacations are planned and back-to-school activities ramp up. To fully meet the needs of hospital patients in the coming days and weeks, donations are urgently needed from new and current donors. As a special thank you, those who come out to give blood or platelets with the Red Cross now through Aug. 31 will be emailed a $5 Target eGiftCard.

Exchange student hosts wanted
The Program of Academic Exchange Vermont (PAX) is looking for local families interested in hosting high school exchange students in Brattleboro and Bellows Falls for the coming school year.
Clara is one such student, a 15-year-old girl from Spain whose interests include skiing, scouting, and gymnastics. Could you open your home to one of these students?
Host families come in all shapes and sizes - they represent the diversity of American culture, with varied economic, religious, and racial backgrounds. Among those who truly enjoy the exchange experience are parents looking to give their families a glimpse of the world and introduce them to new customs and cultures, without having to travel the globe.
Many host families don't have high school age children, while others have adult children who no longer live at home. They say that hosting an exchange student gives them an opportunity to enrich their own lives and connect with their community in a whole new way.
