SEVCA offers free tax return preparation

WESTMINSTER — The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help for taxpayers who have household income up to $66,000.

SEVCA has experienced, IRS-certified volunteers trained to prepare tax returns for taxpayers in Windham and Windsor counties, as well as neighboring New Hampshire.

Free tax preparation is offered at locations in Westminster, White River Junction, and Windsor through the second week of April.

SEVCA also will offer an additional benefit of an FSA site for those who may not qualify within the VITA scope of regulations. This is a self-facilitated site that must be used at their site locations. Call SEVCA VITA Tax Site Coordinator Leslie Wood at 802-722-4575, ext. 199, for more details.

VITA volunteers can help with special credits, such as the Earned Income Tax, Education Credits, CTC, ACTC, other dependents, and the Affordable Care Act's Premium Tax Credit Reconciliation.

They also prepare Vermont income tax returns, Homestead Declarations and Property Tax Adjustments and Renter's Rebate claims.

In addition to free tax return assistance, VITA sites offer free electronic filing. Individuals taking advantage of the e-file program receive their refunds in half the time compared to returns filed on paper - even faster, when tax refunds are deposited directly into a bank account.

Free tax preparation is available by appointment only. Volunteers will serve taxpayers at SEVCA's main office in Westminster on Mondays. Appointments can be made by calling 800-464-9951 through reception.

For appointments at White River Junction or Windsor locations, in Vermont, call 866-444-4211, or if in NH, simply dial 2-1-1 from a NH phone, or anyone can go online at nhtaxhelp.org. Go to “Schedule an appointment now!” and select White River Junction or Windsor sites.

Upper Valley appointments are on Wednesdays at St. Paul's Church. 749 Hartland Ave., and Thursdays at the Windsor Connection Resource Center.
