Area youth gave a week of in poverty- and hurricane-relief work in North Carolina

BRATTLEBORO-The Brattleboro Area Interfaith Youth Group went off to Asheville, North Carolina!

The multicultural group of 12 youth and young adults, ranging in age from 13 to 22, and six adult leaders left April 12 in two vans for their service and learning week there.

The group participated in hurricane- and poverty-relief activities, working closely with social services agencies in the area.

The youth's volunteer efforts each day were coordinated and debriefed by Asheville Youth Mission, who purchased their groceries for meals and provided basic lodging in sleeping bags in an Asheville church basement.

They spent a night at the Nature Camp in the hills of Virginia on the way down and back.

The goals of the interfaith group of Christian, Muslim and Jewish young people from Putney, Dummerston, Brattleboro, and Guilford are many.

All monthly activities aim to develop leaders, serve others, build community, support justice, and practice compassion.

No church affiliation or spiritual practice is necessary - just a commitment to being of service and an openness to young people of different cultures and races.

This couldn't have happened without the generous support of businesses, area churches, the Lise Sparrow Fund, the Rotary Club, and generous individual donors and groups. The young people held multiple fundraisers and presentations to keep the out of pocket expense to a minimum.
