BRATTLEBORO-The Root Social Justice Center is ending the 2024–25 school season with The Black Youth Scholarship Kickoff. In honor of the late Angela Berkfield, co-founder of the organization, The Root will host a birthday party FUNdraiser for their annual Black Youth Scholarship at the Brattleboro Kiwanis Shelter at Memorial Park on Saturday, June 21, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Guests can expect to have a good time catching up with old friends, listening and dancing to music, sharing a meal together, and learning from our Youth about The Black Youth Scholarship and how to support it, organizers said.
This is a community event. Families are encouraged to attend and to bring a potluck dish to share.
This celebration in honor of Berkfield's life and legacy is also a call to support The Black Youth Scholarship Fund. Her birthday is June 27; she would have been 48 this year.
The Root's hope is that this will become an annual tradition to raise funds for the following year's round of scholarships. All money raised will go directly to the scholarship fund and the planning of next year's celebration.
This year's event will occur rain-or-shine. A car will be available to help folks get up the hill to the event space, making sure everyone can join. The Root will be firing up the grill and providing food, drinks, and dessert. Throughout the day, they will be playing music - including some of Angela's favorite tunes - setting the mood for eating, mingling, and dancing.
During the celebration, the youth-led scholarship committee will present about the Fund and why it's so important to the community.
