Vermont Jazz Center to launch a new semester of classes in mid-September

BRATTLEBORO-The Vermont Jazz Center (VJC) launches its winter-spring season of classes, starting in mid-September. Most sessions are 10 weeks long and begin the week of Sept. 14.

This season's offerings include a new free daytime course that focuses on the history of jazz and shares lots of tips to enhance one's listening experience. All are welcome to Jazz 101 with jazz scholar and educator Ben Young, director of the Jazz History Database and educator at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The course is geared toward beginners, but can also benefit all musicians and advanced listeners.

The Jazz Center offers all levels of classes and jam sessions to build abilities while also creating opportunities for group musical activities. Students may choose from various ensemble classes taught by experienced educators in a supportive environment. Contact VJC director Eugene Uman for more information at [email protected].

This semester's courses include: Youth Jazz Ensemble, Soubrette Jazz Choir, Latin Jazz Ensemble, two Blue Note Ensembles, Jazz Guitar Ensemble, the Fearless Improvising Ensemble, Jazz 101, and Samba Percussion Ensemble.

Soubrette Choir begins on Sept. 9. For more information, contact Anna Patton at [email protected].

All classes will culminate in an afternoon of performances starting at noon on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Jazz Center's performance space at Cotton Mill Hill.
