BRATTLEBORO-The Vermont Jazz Center presents vocalist Charenee Wade Thursday, July 23, at 7:30 p.m. Wade is known for her “deep grooves and uncanny ability to bring energy and excitement to every performance,” according to event promters.
Wade will be singing jazz standards from the Great American Songbook; her original compositions; selections from her Motema Music release, Offering; and songs from the repertoire of jazz poets Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson. She has been actively performing this summer with the Urban Bushwomen and tap dancer Michela Marino Lerman at Jacob’s Pillow and in New York City at JazzMobile, El Barrio de Arte, and Dizzy’s Coca-Cola.
This Thursday evening concert is a kick-off to Wade’s sold-out vocal weekend at the Jazz Center. She will be singing with pianist Eugene Uman, bassist Jamie MacDonald, and drummer Claire Arenius. Her vocal workshop will give participants the tools to develop their skills as improvisers and work on the subtleties of their repertoire.
Wade’s goal for this performance is to “illustrate the process of developing rhythmical grooves and textures and demonstrate how to create an arc of energy when programming a jazz set.” The July 23 concert will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.
