MARLBORO-Under the artistic direction of Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss, Marlboro Music’s 75th anniversary season continues on Saturday, Aug. 1, and Sunday, Aug. 2, with the third weekend of concerts and free open rehearsals throughout the week in Persons Auditorium, 2472 South Rd.
Some 18 musicians will take the stage, reflecting the distinctive mix of seasoned and emerging talent that Marlboro brings together each summer. Weekend performances and open rehearsals will continue through Aug. 16.
Saturday evening’s program opens with Schubert’s Viola, D. 786, a setting of a poem by Franz von Schober for bass-baritone and piano, performed by vocalist Evan Luca Gray accompanied by Solomon Ge.
Jörg Widmann’s “Once Upon a Time...” for clarinet, viola, and piano follows, played by clarinetist Jonathan Leibovitz, violist Hsin-Yun Huang, and pianist Changyong Shin.
The evening concludes with Brahms’s String Quartet in A minor, Op. 51, No. 2 with violinists Leah Amory and Clara Neubauer, violist Sofia Gilchenok, and cellist Marcy Rosen.
Sunday’s program begins with Bartok’s “Contrasts,” BB 116, “one of the 20th century’s most vivid explorations of the clarinet’s expressive range,” said organizers, performed by pianist Ayane Nakajima, clarinetist Arthur Stockel, and violinist Meesun Hong Coleman.
Schubert’s String Quartet in A minor, D. 804, follows, performed by violinists Oliver Neubauer and Amory, violist Laura Liu, and cellist Alice Neary. The afternoon closes with Beethoven’s “Archduke” Trio, with co-Artistic Director Jonathan Biss, violinist Anatol Toth, and cellist Macintyre Taback.
