First floor of Transportation Center closed for repairs

BRATTLEBORO - As of July 7, the Brattleboro Transportation Center has fully closed the first-floor deck of the parking garage and Flat Street vehicle entrance to allow for the replacement of the deck's protective membrane.

This closure, which affects all parking spaces and any vehicle and pedestrian access on the first floor, is expected to continue through the first week of August.

The remainder of the parking garage will be open via the Elliot Street entrance, and other parking lots in town will be open.

Public meeting on Vermont's environmental justice law

BRATTLEBORO - On Monday, July 14, from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. at Brooks Memorial Library (224 Main St.), a public information meeting will held by Vermont's Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) Civil Rights and Environmental Justice Unit to discuss the Environmental Benefits Spending Guidance (EBSG).

Vermont's Environmental Justice Law, enacted in 2022, requires the ANR to develop this guidance to help designated Vermont state agencies report on the investments that support communities, especially those most affected by environmental issues.

The guidance explains how agencies should document and share information about the investments that result in environmental benefits for Environmental Justice Focus Populations.

The EBSG does not tell each agency what investments they should make; however, the law requires a public comment period. The EBSG is also a resource for anyone interested in learning how environmental benefits are reported.

RFPL hosts Poetry Open Mic session

BELLOWS FALLS - It's time for the Rockingham Free Public Library's Summer Poetry Open Mic. All are invited to rustle up some poems by a favorite poet, dig out some poems they've penned over the years, or sharpen their pencils (and wits) to write original poetry. Sharing will take place on Poetry Open Mic Night Tuesday, July 15, from 6 to 7 p.m., at the library.

Come to listen and support these brave souls. This event is free. For more information, email [email protected], call 802-463-4270, go to rockinghamlibrary.org, or stop by the library at 65 Westminster St.

Guilford Cares offers a senior walk on July 15

GUILFORD - On Tuesday, July 15, from 10:30 to noon, join Guilford Cares for a senior walk with Bassett Hill resident and town tree warden Matt Stinchfield (aka Matty Adams), who will show folks around the less-frequented southeast corner of town. The meetup point is 108 Bassett Hill Rd. at the giant mushroom mailbox.

Walkers will take a level route along shady Bassett Hill Road toward the former Howe Farm, see some old foundations left by early homesteaders, imagine what the place looked like 150 years ago, and learn to recognize diseases affecting ash, beech, and other trees.

Participants will also see Stinchfield's mushroom operation in the forest understory.

For more information, contact Guilford Cares at 802-579-1350 or [email protected].
