Work of Rona Lee Cohen featured at MGFA

BRATTLEBORO-Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts, 181 Main St., hosts “Carrying On,” an exhibition of the art of Rona Lee Cohen, from June 27 through Aug. 9. An artist reception is planned for Saturday, June 27, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Cohen will also present a walkabout in the gallery alongside her exhibition, where visitors can enjoy an informal gallery talk and conversation on Saturday, July 25, at 4 p.m.

“It’s hard to find a true, untrammelled note in this time of electrified opinionation,” Cohen wrote in her artist statement. “I remember thinking ‘in times like these you need a lucky charm.’ I wandered the house and there was Joan’s papier-maché sculpture ‘Guardian.’ And that was a beginning, a heart-to-heart with my dear artist friend and her sculpture that felt so protective and pink.”

She describes travels in the fall to New York City and Washington, D.C., when she visited galleries and museums, viewing works of “so many artists whose work touches our humanity and leads the way.” Musing on the boundless freedom of expression of art, she wrote, “I am awed by [the artists’] brilliance and temerity.”

Cohen began the series of paintings featured in this exhibit “in a more reckless and free way than usual — slipping around in paint ahead of hesitation, led by the simplicity of urge, snatching a bit of courage for the ride.”

The gallery announced 30% of the artist’s proceeds from the sale of her works will benefit the International Rescue Committee and Equal Justice Initiative.

Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, noon to 5 p.m., or by appointment. For more information, call 802-251-8290 or email [email protected].
