Rockingham cemeteries exhibit now at RFPL
BELLOWS FALLS — The Rockingham Cemetery Committee presents an ongoing exhibit at the Rockingham Free Public Library, 65 Westminster St., showcasing the rich history, artistry, and evolving traditions of Rockingham’s five municipal cemeteries.
From the nationally recognized Rockingham Meeting House cemetery to the civic landscapes of the Oak Hill, Restland, and Saxtons River cemeteries, to the rural cemetery in Cambridgeport, there is much to explore.
Of particular note is the 18th-century Samuel Walker slate headstone and information on its artistic, cultural, and historic value. Other displays explain the assessment photography now underway in the cemeteries and the digital database of cemetery information being developed in collaboration with the library. Genealogical storylines demonstrate the connection between the cemeteries and the day-to-day life of the community.
The exhibit underscores the critical importance of historic preservation and volunteer stewardship. Community members are invited to contribute through a survey about the cemeteries and to step forward to volunteer for projects led by the cemetery committee.
